Description
The genus Araneus is wide spread and there are about 650 species. We call them "Fall Spiders" because they are mature and buid huge webs in the autumn in our area. Other common names are "Barn Spider" and "European Garden Spider".
If you look closely you'll see one hind leg is holding on to a thread of silk. I think this is to feel if prey becomes entangled.
I love their webs and the many colors of the different species. This picture was taken after a rain storm in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, USA, on September 2, 2012.
