Description
These handsome woodpeckers are about the size of a Robin. People sometimes mistakenly call them "red-headed" woodpeckers because of the lovely, almost neon red of the male's cap. The female has it too, but less of it. A Red-headed woodpecker is red over the whole head down to the shoulders.
Many woodpeckers have this black and white patterning on their backs - very handsome. Their diet is mainly insects but they eat plenty of seeds and nuts, too.
