Description
These are HUGE woodpeckers, the size of a crow. Although they are common here, people rarely see them because they are shy. Although they come to our suet in the winter, whenever natural foods are available they stay in the woods.
This is a pair - the female on he left has a golden patch o her "forehead" and no red check patch. The male on the right has a bright red check patch and no golden forehead. Their necks are long when stretched out to reach food. These were the models for Woody Woodpecker and his funny laugh. Listen for the laugh and maybe you'll see a Pileated:>)

This picture was taken January 10, 2015, in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, USA (through the kitchen window). I used the Canon T4i paired with a Tamron 150-600 lens.
Dedicated to gentle giants. Although these birds WOULD hurt a fly, they would never hurt another animal.

WHAT A SHOT! Amazing that both of them were at the suet and you were steady of hand in your kitchen, I'm sure you were holding your breath!!! Fabulous!
Carol Senske replied:
I try to get pictures away from feeders but this was an excellent opportunity to show both male and female together. Thanks for the lovely comment, Nancy! Hope winter is treating you okay - we are almost halfway through January:>)
