Description
Vintage fishing tackle, especially the lures, are hot collector's items, especially when in pristine condition. I, on the other hand, love the battered and worn warriors, veterans of heroic battles with feisty gamefish:>).
The majority of these lures, sometimes called plugs, were made of wood, although plastic did exist and Atom made some plastic lures. These are not correctly called "antique" since antique is 100 or more years old. They are correctly termed "vintge", but people still name them as antique - petty point that I give in to and even use the term myself at times.
Cap'n Bills wooden, saltwater fishing lures were a "go-to" plug for many Striper fisherman in the 1940's & 1950's. Cap'n Bills was one of the biggest lure companies of it's era, specializing in plugs for catching Striped Bass & Bluefish. Charles Sherer sold his lures out of Capt. Bill's Bait Shop in Little Compton, Rhode Island, USA. Sometime in the early fifties the company was sold and they moved and were distributed by Red Top Bait Company (still there and I know it well) in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.
