Description
Skates are not as common as folks think. Like their cousins, the sharks and rays, over-fishing and needless killing are impacting their numbers. These are the egg cases of skates. The Mom attaches her eggs to an anchor of some sort and they remain there until the youngster hatches and swims off to make a life of it's own. These are dried and show tears so we know the little ones hatched and are not still in the cases.
Island Beach State Park in New Jersey offers many treasures to those who comb the beach. It's a lovely place for people to enjoy the shore and all it's plants and indigenous animals.

Giggles and snorts, Kathy:>). I just got back from visiting family on Cape Cod and we went on a seal cruise (very touristy thing to do when that's your home turf). I'll post a pic in the near future. These are gray seals - HUGE - heads like horses or Edward Gorey creatures. They are fun and curious, but I think they wouldn't be super friendly if someone tried to swim with them; they'd probably swim away. They probably keep company with Sponge Bob, too:>)

Cool, I wonder if they were still viable.
Carol Senske replied:
No - the baby has hatched:>). The cases generally stay attached to their anchor (mostly seaweed) or buried in sand until the young are born. These had tears in them and they were not moist and flexible which indicates the little skates are out there, swimming happily with Sponge Bob (I only know he lives under the sea).
