Description
If someone told you they found a plant that had beautiful, shiny, green foliage, flowered easily, and had berries for wildlife PLUS it was easy to grow and you could even eat some of the parts - what would you think? Would you think briars, aka brambles? This is the Smilax vine. There are many kinds and I haven't dug deeply into finding a specific ID.
These tough plants grow just about everywhere and can be a pain in the neck when it decides to take root where you don't want it!
I took this photo May 23, 2012, in Tylersport, Pennsylvania, USA.

This is pretty darn interesting plant Carol. Love those shinny leaves. I'll bet you could grow this over objects and make an abstract landscpe that would be fun. V/F

When this thorny beauty is happy it can grow to over 20 feet. It also sprouts from rhizomes and easily can cover a tree or structure after a number of years - not anywhere near as aggressive as kudzu that can grow (I hear) a foot in a day!).
