Description
This little guy (gal?) was taking a mid-morning sunbath on a lily pad. Painted turtles are the most common turtle in North America. It lives in in ponds and lakes, and may sometimes be found in slow moving streams. They've been around for 15 million years, and they can live up to the age of 55 and sometimes longer. There are four sub-species and their ranges do overlap. Although they are the most common turtle in North America, their habitat is threatened in some areas. The females leave their safe water homes to lay eggs in nests dug into the dirt. Road kills happen when the Moms are seeking a suitable nesting area and when the babies migrate back to the water. I LOVE THIS !!He is precious...!!What an awesome capture...when I was 10 years old I would go down by this stream and catch turtles with a soft long handled garden rake..take them home and put them in my 3 by 5 ft round swimming pool! They were all named and I swear they understood everything I said !, After a day of playing and swimming.. I would release them back into the stream behind my home. Sometimes I would paint a a small lime green or bright red dot , so I could watch for them when they would sunbath ! I grew up with more critter friends where I lived than kids to play with .I love how this photo instantly took me back to a very special time ...Thank you !!!FV
