Description
This serious pest of lilies was first found in Canada in 1945, and by the 1990s was not uncommon in New England, USA. They probably came in on bulbs from Europe where they are native, but they are also found naturally in Asia. The UK is now battling these pests, too.
The beetle eats lily leaves, stems, flowers, and buds and will decimate a garden. We have no natural enemies to keep them in check although work is being done in that area. Right now, picking them off by hand is the most effective means of organically controlling them.

Oh, it's not my first year, believe me and what is really bad about them is if you don't catch them, they ruin any future growth :(

Very nice capture of it but, I must say, I do hate them for the reasons you described! Caught them this year Thank God, before they took over my white lily's!
Carol Senske replied:
I'm glad you caught them. Keep an eye out for the biological predators that should be coming on the market because these pests aren't going away. I'm not particularly fond of either chemicals or introduced predators (unintended consequences always happen), but the unstoppable nature of this invasion is worrisome because of the horrific damage they cause.

Great macro of this voracious little garden pest, Carol! Of course, one can find beauty, even in the strange, The contrast of this piece is fabulous, showing off the veins in the leaves, and every detail of the beetle. Thanks for the detailed description of this insect and its habits, as it may come in useful someday, as we have a lot of lilies, but haven't see any on ours yet. Maybe they aren't really big, Elvis fans! LOL Hope you have a great day and thanks for sharing. F/V on this detailed piece!
