Artist's Description
This is the species of reindeer lichen that seems most likely as a correct ID - please let me know if I've guessed wrong:>).
Reindeer lichen grow in alpine tundra areas as well as open, northern woods and well-drained locations. They can be found as far south as Florida in the USA, but are much more common in the cold. northern climes of all those colder countries. This lichen picture was taken on Island Beach State Park in Seaside Park, New Jersey, in July of 2012. It grows in sand in open areas of scrubby woods.
This lichen is an important food source for reindeer. It is a slow-grower and has a tough time coming back from disasters like over-grazing, fires, and maybe hurricanes like Sandy. I guess we'll see about that next year.

About Carol Senske
I always wanted to try photography, and my retirement offered an opportunity to do just that. The natural world is my first love. Here you will find pictures of things both large (landscapes, for instance) and small (macro) that catch my eye. I hope the images serve as a window into the natural world many of you don't have the chance to see. In a sense, I'm trying to create a guided nature trail, sharing what information I have about the subject. I'm always grateful for new and better information and welcome all input. Learning is food for the mind and soul. Nothing is ever harmed in the picture-taking process, but some things that wander into our home (like spiders) are carefully removed from the house after they serve as "models"....
