Description
These are fairly large and their mandibles are strong, but if you pick them up carefully behind the head you'll be fine. They are called Reddish-brown Stag Beetles (Lucanus capreolus). These beetles feed on sap when adults, and the larvae eat decaying stumps and such. They are night flying insects and are attracted to lights. Their range is wide with a span of roughly the eastern portion of North America.
This picture was taken in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, on June 3, 2011.
