Unlike centipedes which are soft-bodied and mainly carnivorous, millipedes have an exoskeleton and generally eat decomposing plant matter. Centipedes have only one pair of legs per body segment while millipedes have two. If you look closely at this guy, all rolled up in fear of me, you'll see the legs.
Centipedes can bite; millipedes won't but they do have a noxious excretion.
Neither centipedes nor millipedes are insects; they are arthropods but can correctly be called "bugs".

I always wanted to try photography, and my retirement offered an opportunity to do just that. The natural world is my first love. Here you will find pictures of things both large (landscapes, for instance) and small (macro) that catch my eye. I hope the images serve as a window into the natural world many of you don't have the chance to see. In a sense, I'm trying to create a guided nature trail, sharing what information I have about the subject. I'm always grateful for new and better information and welcome all input. Learning is food for the mind and soul. Nothing is ever harmed in the picture-taking process, but some things that wander into our home (like spiders) are carefully removed from the house after they serve as "models"....

Carol, do we have these little creatures in our neck of the woods? I will have to look a little more carefully and where I step. Awesome macro capture of this beautifully colored and textured millipede! Following your work!
Carol Senske replied:
Absolutely!`You'll find them in leaf litter in the woods or under logs and such places. We also have another species that is a beautiful blue-gray with pink legs. They are a little more round than the kind pictured here which is somewhat flatter (but not flat). Thank you for the honor of this lovely compliment!
