I'm tentatively identifying this as Tickseed Sunflower, a native annual or biennial plant that can grow up to 4 feet tall, branching occasionally. A plant will often have several flowers in bloom at the same time. Each daisy-like flower is about 2" across, and they bloom from late summer to early fall. The flowers are slightly fragrant, which is noticeable in a large patch. They are in the aster family.
They like full sun and wet or moist areas with rich soil. This plant is easy to grow, but could take over at a disturbed site that is sunny and moist. It can form large colonies by reseeding itself. This species of Bidens is more tolerant of hot dry weather than many others.
The name "Tickseed" comes from the way the seeds stick to clothing.
This picture was taken in Montgomery County, Pennylsvlania, USA, on September 14, 2012.

I always wanted to try photography, and my retirement offered an opportunity to do just that. The natural world is my first love. Here you will find pictures of things both large (landscapes, for instance) and small (macro) that catch my eye. I hope the images serve as a window into the natural world many of you don't have the chance to see. In a sense, I'm trying to create a guided nature trail, sharing what information I have about the subject. I'm always grateful for new and better information and welcome all input. Learning is food for the mind and soul. Nothing is ever harmed in the picture-taking process, but some things that wander into our home (like spiders) are carefully removed from the house after they serve as "models"....

What a beautiful grouping of wildflowers Carol! f/v
Carol Senske replied:
Any flowers in Maine yet - LOL! I get impatient this time of year just waiting for those first blossoms to appear and yell, "SPRING". Of course there is always the Skunk Cabbage which is now on it's downward blooming time. Thanks for the oh-so-nice comment and the V/F:>) They will help hold me over until the bloodroots and hepaticas begin.
