Description

This tree is certified as an historic tree over 300 years old. It’s a venerable old tree much beloved by people in our neighborhood.
This tree is certified by the Pennsylvania Forestry Association and the age verified by a “core sampling” which gave the people the ability to count the tree rings.
A picture of this tree hangs in the township building with the previous owners dwarfed beneath it.
There is always the worry that some jerk will come along and do damage, but it is a tree, and as such is given very little notice in the big, wide world. We here love our trees, and this one is a beautiful specimen.
With the death of my neighbor a couple years ago, the house went to a young couple with small kids. They took up the banner for the tree and love it as much as the rest of us. It is, indeed, older than George Washington. Some people call the species Pin Oak, but more properly (I guess) it’s a White Oak.
The tree is listed in the book,
Penn’s Woods 1682-1982: The oldest trees in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Eastern Shore, Maryland Hardcover – 1981
by Halfred W. Wertz (Editor), M. Joy Callender (Editor) . I bought a copy for my dear neighbor the year before she died. I forget the exact page – something like 167 – the tree was highlighted.
Yes, Geo. Washington could have leaned on this tree, and yes, it is over 300 years old.
