Description
These are not particularly large dragonflies, and although nicely colored they are not fancy. I love them for their habit of sitting high on an isolated forb to wait for unsuspecting meals to come by. They are partial to lakes, ponds and marshes and range east of the Rockies - sometimes even seen in southern-most Canada.
This photograph was taken at the open space pond, Skymount, in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, USA, on August 7, 2012.

Thank you so much for this feature in The Beauty of Insects, DiDi - I appreciate it greatly!

Very nice! Sitting high like that sure helps set them off against the sky.
Carol Senske replied:
They are easier to spot than some others because of this habit. I wonder why since they then become targets for hungry birds!
