Description
This young corn snake was about 18 inches long and rattled it's tail to scare me off:>). I would never have seen it if it stayed quiet - LOL - the joke is on him/her. The picture is from 2008 and is one of my early images. This is an excellent example of how animals use camouflage for protection or as a way to surprise prey.
These are beautiful snakes, most are calm and they are NOT poisonous. They are, sadly, popular in the pet trade.

Carol Senske replied:
Hi, Lesley:>). I hope you are well and avoiding this horrible Covid menace. Mostly I heard it, didn't see it until it made noise - LOL.

Yes! I had a little trouble picking it out of the grouncover! Are they venomous? Love the shot, Carol!
Carol Senske replied:
Hi, Bette:>). They are totally harmless and, sadly, the pet trade loves them . They are handsome and generally calm.
