Description
Years back we'd see many of the Brown Pelicans along the Outer Banks of North Carolina (Hatteras Island), USA. Now we regularly see them off the New Jersey shore. This picture is from The Point (Diamond Shoals) in Buxton, North Carolina in October of 2009. I used an Olympus FE 240 - a delightful and capable point and shoot.
Pelicans are graceful fliers, skimming along barely above the crests of waves. They fly up pretty high and then fall, like a cinder block, into the sea to stun small fish making it easy for them to scoop them up.
Brown Pelicans almost went extinct from pesticide pollution much like the ospreys and eagles. They are now common. A success story!

Thank you very much, Bob:>). I loved watching them fly just above the waves - grace personified unlike when they walk o the beach - LOL.

Great capture, Carol! Have never see one in person. Love the big wave in the background too!
Carol Senske replied:
They are so clunky walking on land, but they are grace personified as they fly. Thanks, Laurie!!!

A wonderful bird is the pelican. His bill can hold more than his belly can. Ogden Nash
Carol Senske replied:
That little ditty always makes me laugh. If you watch as they dive, they are like cinder blocks! In flight, they are grave personified. Thank you so much for dropping in (not like a cinder block) and leaving this lovely comment:>)

Beautiful image Mother Nature! We have seen a decline, not only of the pelicans but all birds in the past couple of years. I don't know if this was due to the drought but would love to see them return. l/f
Carol Senske replied:
I wonder if the oil spill has anything to do with that - so sad! I will tell the pelicans you want them to come visit:>) We've seen a general decline in all birds, too - I hope it's only a phase but I feel it isn't. Thanks for coming by:>) Here's hoping for a bird-filled spring and summer for both of us!
