Description
This is one of the first wildflowers to appear in the spring - Bloodroot Wildflower - Sanguinaria canadensis.. It rises out of a clasping leaf that unfurls once the flower is past its prime. Lovely patches of white appear in sun-dapples areas between the trees and at the wood's edge.
They are ephemeral and disappear once the seeds are dispersed. The name "bloodroot" comes from the red/orange sap from the stem that will stain fingers and clothing.
They are low-growing, about four to five inches tall on average, and grow in little colonies.
This picture was taken with a Canon T4i paired with a Tamron 90mm macro lens. on April 12, 2019, in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, USA.
