Description

Black Cohosh grows nicely in our woods and provides a mini environment for a host of small insects and arachnids throughout it's growing season. Now, in Autumn, it provides structure for little spiders to build their capture webs. I like the detail on the seed pods.

Black Cohosh is native to eastern North America and grows happily in the partial shade of rich woodland soils. It's been said to have medicinal properties but no studies have reliably proven the benefits. There seems to be no harm in taking it unless you buy commercial supplements which have been connected to liver damage and some other nasty side effects. These side effects seem to come from the mixtures in the supplements, not necessarily the Black Cohosh. Caution, people, when using commercial Black Cohosh as other herbs are sometimes mixed in and do not appear on the label.
