Description
I was going to call this a Marbled Orb Weaver because we have so many of them, but this spider is much more brown overall than the Marbled kind. So, it's a mystery spider but Araneus for sure. The web is a beautiful orb connecting this seedhead to a bunch of other dried stalks of Black-Eyed Susan plants.
This type of spider builds or repairs it's web every evening and finds a good resting place during the day. If the sun is shining and a hapless insect gets caught in the web, the spider springs into action and captures dinner; the spider is most active at night, however. Notice how well camouflaged it is beneath the seedhead.
These are common, relatively large, and often called by common names like "Cat-Face Spider" or "Cross Spider".
