Description
We see these pretty butterflies in our area mainly in July and August. This one was constantly around our Black-Eyed Susan patch. Although it didn't stay put long at all, I managed to sneak up and get a few pictures. They are gorgeous on the top side of their wings, but the underside is incredible - a lovely brown, white, black, and orange pattern (probably for camouflage).
They are considered common enough that the population is safe. They migrate northward in the summer and to the south in the winter. They are not as numerous as their close cousins, the Painted Lady, however. Their range is from Columbia, South America, up into Canada (Ontario and Manitoba and maybe more).
This picture was taken in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, USA, on July 11, 2012.

It had to be freshly hatched to be this gorgeous. The black-eyed susan flowers were what it wanted - heck with the butterfly bush. Thank you for the the V/F and lovely comment, Bob:>)
