Description
This was growing on an almost vertical bank of a five foot deep ditch - I scrambled don into the ditch to grab a photo. At first I though it was a bracket (or shelf or plate) fungus but it was growing more like a mushroom.. It grew so close to the ground that I couldn't tell if there was a proper stem.
So here it is, a handsome pair of . . . ? A friend who is more knowledgeable than I on fungi feels it is probably a polypore (shelf fungus). My gut says she is right.
This picture was taken July 28, 2012, in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, USA.
I've checked my field guides and the internet but cannot be certain of an
ID for these guys; if you know more information, please let me know, too:>)

Beautiful! Mother Nature, I have so enjoyed exploring your portfolio...the collection of “mushrooms” is truly beautiful. This is among my favorites...LF
Carol Senske replied:
Thank you ever so much, Laurel:>). I'm playing "catch up" again so forgive the cut and paste. You honor me by browsing through so much of my portfolio!

So perfectly formed....(I've seen a few of these sunburnt and leathery) and delicately colored, surrounded by just the right host of forest deliciousness.....very beautiful photograph. V/F
Carol Senske replied:
Anecdotal evidence has me beieving they like loads of moisture. They were around after a long period of daily rain but I haven't seen them since. You gave me a V/F! Thanks:>)

What an awesome looking thing--I am assuming mushroom? v.
Carol Senske replied:
Hi, Angela:>) I think mushroom but it really has me puzzled. Pretty, though! Many thanks for the vote and wonderful comment.
