Description
These baby groundhogs are already eating their way toward the plants we don't want them to eat. Time to get out the liquid, environmentally safe, very effective spray (don't want to use the name). Groundhogs (Marmota monax) are found almost everywhere in the USA, including Alaska, and belong to the squirrel family - BIG squirrels. They do climb trees; we've watched them.
Here in Pennsylvania we have Punxsutawney Phil who determines on Groundhog Day if we get six more weeks of winter. He's a likable sort of groundhog, sometimes going by the name of Woodchuck, Whistle Pig, or Grundsow.
This trio of youngsters is ready to be on their own - waiting for Mom to kick them out forcefully, I guess. They will set up territories of their own and live up to six years in the wild. they mainly eat plants and nuts, but will snack on snails and bugs.
I took this picture today (May 15, 2012) in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, USA.

Too cute! fv : )
Carol Senske replied:
Thank you very much for the V/F! They really are:>) It's been a few days since we've seen them, so they probably left home to explore the world and "find themselves" - LOL. Wonder if the parents feel like empty-nesters.

awww how cute!!!
Carol Senske replied:
Hi, Kim:>) I feel like the parent who can't wait for the kids to be gone - they will scatter to the winds and find territories of their own. Hope they do it soon! I'm running out of repellent:>)

Yep, look at them checking out the neighborhood, ready to make their move...
Carol Senske replied:
I'd just said to my husband a day ago that with all the running around we've been doing, I haven't seen any groundhogs. Today they are all over the place - like spontaneous generation!

Oh yeah they are definately up to no good, lol. Nice capture. We have some that live under our shed in the back yard.
Carol Senske replied:
The Mom must weigh about 15 pound - she's huge and fat and eats all the time:>). As long as yours stay out of any gardens, they're cute - LOL. Thanks for stopping by, Billie sue:>)
