Description
These pretty butterflies are especially fond of sunny, open fields and meadows. They love mud puddling - the gathering of butterflies at a puddle's edge or in mud where they can drink.
The coloration on these beauties can vary.
The caterpillars feed mainly at night and prefer the clovers and alfalfa. The butterflies are nectar feeders and will visit a wide variety of flowers, but you will almost always find them on milkweed, asters, and goldenrod.
They range from Southern Canada to central Mexico, coast to coast in the United States except for the Florida peninsula. They are one of the most common butterflies in North America.
This picture was taken in East Greenville, Pennsylvania, USA, on September 7, 2012.
